The Legal Distinction

It is crucial to understand that in the UK, an independent celebrant-led ceremony is not legally binding. The celebrant officiates your personalised celebration, but they cannot legally marry you.

To be legally married, couples must complete the legal paperwork and declarations that can only be done by registrars.
This is typically done in one of two ways:
1. A "statutory" or 2+2 ceremony at a local register office with a registrar, which involves a brief, no-frills meeting with you and your two witnesses. This can be done on a different day (before or after your celebrant-led ceremony) and costs a minimal fee, around £56.00 including the marriage certificate.
​​2. Hiring a registrar to attend a licensed venue to conduct a brief legal ceremony, which can then be followed by your personalised celebrant-led service.
